HALF DOL.
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Introduction of Coins
The New Orleans Mint struck nearly twice as many half dollars in 1852 as its cousin in Philadelphia, but this is still a rare issue across all grades. Mint State pieces are extremely rare, with gems seemingly unknown. The projected demand for half dollars was greatly overestimated, with 12 obverse dies being sent to New Orleans. Only two of these have been identified, and the others likely were destroyed unused. Just two reverse dies were employed for a total of two die marriages for 1852-O. No reverse dies were sent to New Orleans that year, enough being on hand already from previous years. All examples were coined with a collar having 143 reeds, and no varieties are known.Read More
