Introduction of Coins
Half dollar production plunged at the Philadelphia Mint this year, a recognition that the coins could not circulate with their bullion value exceeding their face value. Those that were coined mostly were sent to England as just so much silver bullion and quickly destroyed. As a consequence this issue is rare across all grades. Mint State examples, while not common, do exist in numbers disproportionate to the low mintage, and they tend to be quite well made. Choice and gem pieces are available but highly prized and priced. A single obverse die and three reverses were paired for a total of three die marriages. This suggests that the 77,130 1852(P) half dollars were struck sporadically at different times during the year. No significant varieties have surfaced, but reed counts of either 144 or 145 are known.Read More
