Introduction of Coins
The New Orleans Mint underwent a lull in half dollar production during 1857. While 818,000 coins hardly make for a rarity, this issue is somewhat scarce in the higher circulated grades and genuinely rare in Mint State. Gems are remarkably elusive and will be found only in the most advanced collections. Typically, 1857-O half dollar are found well struck from dies that were not overused or overpolished. The Bugert die register for New Orleans half dollars identified six obverses paired with three reverses, for a total of eight die marriages. All 1857-O half dollars were struck with a single collar gauge having 140 reeds. Varieties are minimal for this issue, with one minor repunched date (WB-103) and a misplaced date (VP-001, WB-102).Read More
