Introduction of Coins

Like most Philadelphia Mint half dollars of the Civil War years, 1864(P) is scarce overall yet with a disproportionately high survival rate of Mint State coins. As silver was not circulating in most of the nation at that time, some of these coins sat idle in vaults long enough to be discovered in later years when they were desirable to collectors. Gems are in the minority of MS examples, but they are not truly rare, a very unusual situation for this series. Wiley and Bugert identified six obverse and five reverses dies. These were used in various pairings to create eight known die marriages. All examples seen have either 152 or 153 reeds. The only variety is a very minor repunched date (WB-102) that is little interest, given the overall scarcity of this issue.Read More
