Proof coin sales rose a bit in 1865. It's remotely possible that more were purchased in celebration of the war's end, but a more likely explanation is that a slightly more stable paper dollar made these transactions a bit more palatable. Gem proofs of the 1865 half dollar are more available than for 1864, but certified Cameo and Ultra Cameo examples are still very elusive. At least two obverse dies were used for this year's production, but more detailed information awaits publication of Bill Bugert's die registry for Philadelphia Mint halves of this decade.Read More
