The novelty of the motto IN GOD WE TRUST having passed, sales of proof sets declined in 1867 but remained higher than during the war years. The federal paper currency was still depreciated in comparison to hard money, so the prices of proof coins were higher when paid for in notes. This is hard to imagine today, but Americans of the time were quite used to it, unless they lived in the western states and territories, where paper was all but unknown.
