Introduction of Coins
There were two deliveries of silver proof coins (from the coiner to the treasurer) in 1875, the first including 100 sets leftover from 1874. The remaining 400 sets delivered at the end of the first quarter were dated 1875, with another 200 sets coming in the third quarter, for a total production of 700 1875 proof sets. Of course, the minor coins were produced in excess of these figures, as they were frequently sought individually, while the number of gold proofs remained quite small. Walter Breen noted two die marriages for the 1875 proof half dollar. Both reveal some minor flaws, as was typical of that decade. Even so, there are more gems than found for most previous dates, though the number of Cameo proofs certified is quite small.Read More
