This date was struck only to extent needed to satisfy the demand from coin collectors and gift givers. It's production was higher than in 1879, as speculative interest grew in such limited edition half dollars. Mint State survivors are plentiful in relation to the number coined, with numerous gems available to collectors. Worn examples are actually more elusive. Wiley and Bugert identified two die marriages for the 1880 currency strike half dollar. All coins of this issue are from a single collar having 152 reeds.Read More
