This date was struck only to extent needed to satisfy the demand from coin collectors and gift givers. It's production was higher than in 1879, as speculative interest grew in such limited edition half dollars. Mint State survivors are plentiful in relation to the number coined, with numerous gems available to collectors. Worn examples are actually more elusive.
