Introduction of Coins
Proof coin production receded only slightly from the high figure of 1870. These numbers would vary a bit over the next decade, yet they remained almost consistently higher than the totals for 1862-69, reflecting a general increase in the number of collectors seeking proofs. Walter Breen identified four die marriages, and these await confirmation in a future volume of Bill Bugert's Die Registry for Seated Liberty Half Dollars. Gems are a bit more plentiful for this date than for the few immediately preceding, yet the quality of workmanship in die preparation is still off to the discriminating eye. Certified Cameo pieces are rare, with Ultra Cameo coins being especially so.Read More
