Introduction of Coins
This is a fairly common issue that becomes slightly scarce in grades XF and AU. Mint State survivors are borderline rare, though a number of gem examples have been certified. Most such coins are well struck, though a single die marriage is known with a rusted reverse die. A total of 14 die marriages are known, and these resulted from different combinations of 11 obverse and nine reverse dies. The myriad collars seen in preceding Philadelphia Mint half dollars were reduced to just a single reed count of 145 for this date. A couple of minor RPD varieties are known for 1871(P), and one of these is likewise a MPD, with the base of a stray numeral 1 embedded in Liberty's base.Read More
