Introduction of Coins
The 950 proof half dollars produced for this date could have been struck in a single day, yet this year's mintage of silver proofs was stretched out over nine small batches from January through December. This was a typical pattern for the period, the Mint not wanting to have too many on hand at any one time. This could have resulted in unsold remainders, and it also carried the risk of the delicate proofs being mishandled prior to sale. Walter Breen identified two die marriages for this issue, though he was not too detailed in describing the reverse die or dies. Gems are rare for the 1872 half dollar, with a small population of certified Cameo examples and very few Ultra Cameo pieces.Read More
