Introduction of Coins
Silver coins were still not at par with paper money in 1872, yet the Philadelphia Mint found justification for producing a fairly substantial run of half dollars. These were well made, with few technical problems. Common in grades below XF, the 1872(P) half dollar becomes progressively scarcer, with Mint State survivors being borderline rare. Nevertheless, several gems have been certified. Some 10 die marriages are known from various pairings of eight obverse and four reverse dies. A uniform collar gauge was employed, this having 145 reeds. The only noteworthy variety found thus far is a misplaced date, with the bottom of a stray 8 visible within Liberty's base (WB-102).Read More
