Introduction of Coins

This rare issue rivals the 1870-CC half dollar in that it's mintage was just slightly higher than in that first year. The 1874-CC, however, seems to have survived in somewhat higher numbers across all grades. Desirable in any condition, problem-free coins grading XF and higher are very rare. Mint State coins number perhaps half a dozen, and gems are unknown. As in 1873, the Carson City Mint requested no additional reverse dies, and only four of the six obverses requested were actually shipped. It's likely that personnel at the Philadelphia Mint were skeptical of the need for so many dies, given the low numbers of coins coming out of the western mint. Three die marriages are known, these being the result of a single reverse (Small CC mintmark) paired with three different obverses. All 1874-CC half dollars have 154 reeds. Since one of the two collars used for 1874(P) halves displays this same gauge, collectors are cautioned to watch for added mintmarks.Read More
