Introduction of Coins
The number of circulating half dollars fell to just 4,400 pieces in 1882, creating particularly great interest in the proofs of this date. Sales rose from 1881 to this year's total of 1,100. That figure does not reconcile completely with the number reportedly coined, which was 1,080. Walter Breen speculated that one of the coiner's quarterly reports was lacking in the archive, but this will be hard to prove so long after the fact. The certified population of ordinary proof 1882 half dollars is a bit lower than for the years immediately preceding, but an answer may lie in the relatively high percentage of Cameo examples. Even several Ultra Cameo coins have been certified, suggesting that 1882 halves display better contrast between fields and devices than for most other dates. Dies taken from the old reverse hub of 1866 were finally exhausted by this time, and all proof half dollars 1882-91 feature the Type 2 reverse adopted in 1876.Read More
