Introduction of Coins
The low mintage of this issue makes it a bit more scarce than most others in the 1879-90 period. This applies mostly to worn coins, as the there exists a disproportionately high number of Mint State survivors. These include a number of gems and a few certified as PL (prooflike). A single die marriage was used for the currency strikes, and its obverse shows very slightly repunching of numeral 4 at its base. Two different collars were employed, these having either 152 or 153 reeds. The Wiley-Bugert book does not specify whether these are seen on both proofs and currency strikes or are each unique to one edition.Read More
