This issue is similar to others of the 1880s in that more Mint State coins are known than would have been the case if they were subject to speculative hoarding at the time. Gems are available to the more advanced collector, though certified prooflike pieces are quite rare. Worn examples are less often seen than for most other dates in the limited series of 1879-90, with 1887 being the only issue more difficult to locate. A single die marriage is known, and it's likely that all 5,000 coins were struck in a single day. A lone collar was used, this having 153 reeds.Read More
