Introduction of Coins
This issue rivals 1897-O as the most challenging in the entire series, particularly in the middle circulated grades. Most survivors are very heavily worn, with the reverse typically being one to one-half grades lower than the obverse. The supply of Mint State specimens is very limited, but a higher than usual percentage are especially nice coins. Some remarkable grades have been achieved by 1897-S halves that exceed the best examples of more common dates. Fairly typical of Barber Halves, there are no varieties for this entry.Read More
