Introduction of Coins
Though this entry is not especially common in Mint State grades, those that exist tend to be quite attractive---boldly struck and lustrous. The survival rate of XF and AU coins is much higher than normal, as much of this issue was distributed in The Philippines after American takeover in 1899. Withdrawn when a unique series of coins was created for the islands in 1903, these lightly worn pieces were held by locals for their silver value and repatriated to the United States after World War II. Most, however, have been cleaned and thus do not appear within the Census Report. Ironically, worn coins in grades F and VF are thus more scarce than XF and AU examples. Varieties are limited to mintmark positions, but there is little interest in collecting Barber Halves by die pairs.Read More
