Introduction of Coins
The 1899 Philadelphia Mint half dollar enjoyed the highest production of this coin type, and well worn examples appear in nearly all hoards of circulated Barber Halves. Not surprisingly it is fairly plentiful across all circulated grades, though many of the XF and AU examples have been marred by improper cleaning. Mint State survivors are collectible through MS-65, and a handful of superior pieces have been certified, as well. Prooflike coins are known but quite rarely seen. This issue is generally well struck and lustrous, with many a piece finding its way into someone's type set. Other than slight variations in date position relative to the denticles, there are no varieties for 1899(P).Read More
