Introduction of Coins

The 1900 New Orleans Mint half dollar is quite elusive in all grades Fine and higher. The population of Mint State coins is limited, and nearly all are poorly struck in a range from moderate to severe. This affects the hair above Liberty's forehead and the entire right side of the eagle from the area adjacent to the shield down to the arrow feathers. In addition, this issue sometimes displays "mumps," a sinking of the central area of the obverse dies which resulted in a raised patch on the coins. The New Orleans Mint was notorious for not properly annealing (softenting) its planchets, and this produce weakly struck coins staring in the mid 1880s and getting progressively worse into the 20th Century. There are no varieties other than the natural movement of dates and mintmarks from one die to the next.Read More
