Introduction of Coins
1890 proved to be the final date of 12,000-coin half dollar production, as an actual demand for more halves in circulation arose the following year. This issue is comparable in rarity to the halves of 1888-89, with more Mint State survivors than would have been the case had these coins gone directly into circulation. Gems exist in sufficient numbers to satisfy the advanced date collector, and a number of pieces have been certified as PL (prooflike). Worn coins are scarce in relation to most pre-1879 dates, but they are more available than for the lower-mintage years 1879-87. Wiley and Bugert report two die marriages for this date, though it isn't made clear whether any of the dies were used for both proofs and currency strikes. It's likely that each pair was unique to a single edition, and the Mint easily could have produced all 12,000 non-proofs in a single press run without changing dies. The sole reed count for 1890 half dollars is 153.Read More
