Introduction of Coins

The 1893 Philadelphia Mint half dollar enjoyed the first substantial mintage of the series, yet it is scarcer across all grades than its older brother of the previous year. Lacking the novelty of a new type, fewer were saved. Mint State coins are fairly available through MS-64 but become elusive above this level. Typical of Barber Halves from this decade worn coins tend be extremely so, with few survivors in the most popular collector grades of F through XF.  A couple of tripled-die reverse varieties are known, and these may have been leftover from 1892, a year in which the Philadelphia Mint's engravers seem to have difficulty producing reverse die that did not require multiple impression. The demand from collectors for these varieties is rather limited.Read More
