Introduction of Coins
Any entry in this series having a mintage of fewer than a million pieces will attract collect interest, yet the 1896 Philadelphia Mint half dollar is not really scarce. While gem MS coins are quite elusive, all other grades are fairly well represented. This issue typically comes well struck and with nice luster. No varieties are known for 1896(P), but this date is noteworthy for a small change to the obverse master hub. This is most noticeable at Liberty's ear. Previously almost hollow, it henceforth reveals a central rib of cartilage projecting upward. Careful examination also reveals that the leaves are more pointed than previously.Read More
