Amazingly the Philadelphia Mint recorded the lowest mintages of the Barber Half Dollar series during 1914 for both currency and proof coins. The nation was in an economic recession, and proof sales declined to an astonishing 380 pieces. Though this issue has been hoarded by generations of collectors, it is still scarce across all grades. A fair percentage of the surviving population has been certified as gems, but Cameo proofs are extremely rare.
