Introduction of Coins
Coin production at the New Orleans Mint lasted only through March. No additional funding was provided for coining operations there, so the mint assumed the status of simply a federal assay office until being closed in 1929. The low mintage of this issue has prompted some speculative interest over the years, but it is misleading as to actual rarity. Only at the AU and MS level is the 1909-O half dollar scarce. A fair number of gems have been certified, but some of these may reveal the weakness of strike so often seen on New Orleans Mint coins of the period.Read More
