Introduction of Coins
Proof sales got a boost in 1909 due to collector interest in the new Lincoln Cent. While the minor coins could be purchased as a pair, avoiding the expense of the silver issues, it appears that more than the usual number of buyers opted for the five-coin set. Gems of the 1909 proof half dollar are more available than for the several years preceding. In addition, a higher percentage of this date's production displays sufficient contrast between fields and devices to be certified as Cameo. This would remain true of the silver proofs through the end of the Barber series.Read More
