HALF CENT
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Introduction of Coins
Befitting its relatively high mintage, the 1853 half cent is among the most common dates of this type. Like all Braided Hair Half Cents, it is only rarely seen in grades below Fine; the half cent simply didn't circulate much after its discontinuance in 1857. Mint State pieces are abundant, though these typically show little or no mint red color. However, some may display attractive gunmetal blue or emerald green, so a coin graded MS BN is not necessarily brown.Read More
