Introduction of Coins
Of the 125,000 dimes coined during 1828, the majority are believed to have been dated 1827. There is no reconstructed mintage for this Large Date variety, as die studies have determined that it was struck as part of 1829's production and cannot be isolated. This variety also came subsequent to the Small Date variety, though the latter is more typical of 1829-37 dimes in appearance. Obviously, the Mint was loathe to discard an 1828-dated die of the old style while it was still useable. Examples are scarce across all grades, with Mint State pieces being very rare.Read More
