Introduction of Coins
The published mintage for calendar year 1830 probably includes some pieces dated 1829, while additional 1830-dated dimes were likely coined during 1831. This was the norm rather than the exception, until new Mint Director Robert M. Patterson put a stop to the use of obsolete dies in 1835-36. This is a common date across most grades. Mint State examples of the more common varieties are found with some frequency, though gems remain rare. The eight die marriages known for this date comprise combinations of four obverses and six reverses. Common varieties include JR-2, -4, -5 and -6, while JR-3, -7 and -8 are slightly scarce. The only rare marriage is JR-1, of which only a few dozen are known.Read More
