Introduction of Coins
1934 saw the resuming of the coinage of Peace Dollars. The last silver dollars had been struck in 1928. After then, domestic silver reserves had been exhausted. It wasn't until 1934 that the Mint began acquiring silver from the world markets to strike additional Peace dollars. While this coin had a slightly higher mintage than the Philly mint issue, it did not survive in nearly the same numbers. It is the king of the Peace dollars in uncirculated grades. In fact, only 17 have been graded above gem (including 4 MS65+ coins.) (8/2016)
