Introduction of Coins

Treasury Secretary John Sherman's February 1878 suspension of trade dollar coinage applied only to ones supplied for the export trade in exchange for deposits of silver bullion. This coin remained on the books as a legitimate part of the coinage system, despite having been demonetized in 1876. There was thus no prohibition on selling proofs, and the subsequent proof-only editions became speculative darlings that almost routinely boosted sales above 1,000 pieces through 1883. Tremendous reductions in the number of fractional silver coins being minted for circulation occurred simultaneously with this development, though for entirely different reasons, and this only added to the frenzy for proof sets over the next decade. The 1879 trade dollar is very common within the overall context of proofs, with a corresponding increase in the availability of gems and Cameo pieces. Coin certifieds as Ultra Cameo, however, are just as rare for this date as for any other.Read More
