Introduction of Coins
The certified population of 1875 proof trade dollars is just slightly higher than that of 1874, and indeed this issue is quite scarce; gems are genuinely rare. A fair number have been certified as Cameo, but Ultra Cameo examples are exceedingly rare. The coining of proof trade dollars proceeded in larger batches than in 1874. Press runs of 200-300 pieces reduced the number of occasions that proofs were struck. A new reverse hub was introduced this year that is easily distinguished by its absence of an olive within the eagle's left (viewer's right) claw. This hub was created in lower relief to address the issue of poor striking seen on early coins. The relative rarity of the old hub versus the new on 1875 proofs has not been established with any certainty, and there's little interest in collecting proof coins by varieties.Read More
