Introduction of Coins
Demonetization of trade dollars in July of 1876 had no impact on proof sales. In fact, sales of proofs set a record for the series that would not be topped until the proof-only issue of 1879. This may be attributed to the many persons who toured the Philadelphia Mint in 1876, as the city hosted a world's fair celebrating the centennial of United States independence. Purchasing souvenirs of their visit to the mint was mandatory for many. Despite its high mintage this date is very scarce at the gem level. It's likely that only veteran numismatists knew how to preserve their proofs, while the many coins that went to a general public were mishandled over the years. A fair number of pieces have been certified as Cameo, but those meriting the Ultra Cameo designation are very rare. Small press runs of 50-200 proof trade dollars were made monthly from January to June. Supplemental production occurred in August and November. A new obverse was created this year that added a fifth finger to Liberty's outstretched hand, among other distinctions. Both Type 1 and Type 2 obverse dies were utilized for proof 1876 trade dollars, these in combination with Type 1 and Type reverse dies for a total of three varieties.Read More
