Introduction of Coins
Trade dollars had not been coined at the Carson City Mint since April of 1876 when production finally resumed in June of this year. Additional deliveries occurred in July, August and December. Though the depositors of silver for this purpose asserted that the coins were intended solely for export to the Far East, many instead found their way into domestic circulation. As a demonetized nuisance, trade dollars could be refused in commerce, but many business owners found that such refusals resulted in a loss of business. The 1877-CC trade dollar is scarce in most circulated grades and rare at the Mint State level. Gems are all but unknown, and even choice examples are very scarce and highly sought. There are no notable varieties for this issue. Two mintmark sizes are known: Medium CC and Tall CC. Only specialists seek these varieties, so little premium is attached.Read More
