Introduction of Coins

The order to halt production of trade dollars came on February 22, 1878, but at that time the San Francisco Mint already had deposits of silver for this coin amounting to millions of ounces. It was not until April that the last of these committed coins was produced, and the further striking of trade dollars was thereafter limited to proofs until the series was discontinued by law in 1887. The 1878-S edition is among the most commonly seen of trade dollars across all grades. Mint State coins are plentiful, as well. While gems certainly are not common in an absolute sense, this issue and 1877-S account for most of the high grade pieces known. All 1878-S trade dollars display the Large S mintmark. A couple of doubled-die reverse varieties may be found and some popularity beyond just those specializing in the trade dollar series.Read More
