Introduction of Coins

1913-S cents are scarce across all grades, though not to the extent of those from the years immediately preceding and following. Choice examples in the higher circulated grades are quite challenging, due mostly to environmental damage. Mint State pieces tend to be softly struck from worn dies, and most have little or no original red color. A fully red example should be immediately suspect, unless it has been certified by a major grading service. The term "red" is a bit misleading with this issue, as their original color is more brassy than that of P and D cents. An interesting bit of trivia is revealed by the Mint Director's Annual Report for this year. The San Francisco Mint averaged 218,275 cents per obverse die and 160,835 per reverse. These figures are less than half those realized at the Denver Mint in 1913.Read More
