Introduction of Coins

Overproduction of cents during 1916-20, couples with a severe nationwide recession during 1920-22, reduced the demand for cents to the point where only Denver stuck this denomination in 1922. This coinage was effected entirely during January-February, when cent production was suspended until the latter part of 1924.  1922-D cents displaying full strikes are available, though the majority of this date reveal varying degrees of weakness. The example illustrated was coined with a fresh obverse die that was paired with an already worn reverse that may have left over from the 1920-D production.  Coins displaying full or nearly full red color are not particularly rare, but the generally poor quality of most of this issue precludes the certification of these as gems (MS 65 RD or higher) in all but a very few instances.Read More
