Introduction of Coins

The number of cents struck at the San Francisco Mint had been in decline since its peak in 1944, and 1949's production was the lowest yet. The minting of domestic coinage at San Francisco was suspended altogether from May through September of this recession year.  Most 1949-S cents will show blurry dies with varying degrees of erosion from overuse. This resulted in bright but diffused luster that is superficially quite pleasing. This fact, combined with the tendency of soft strikes to resist or hide contact marks, has made for a fairly generous supply of top-grade gems. The discriminating collector will want to combine high grade with a good strike, and this will prove quite challenging for 1949-S cents.  No varieties of general interest are noted for this issue.Read More
