Introduction of Coins
1939 saw a reduction in proof cent sales, the first since the new program began in 1936. This date is only moderately scarce in fully red gem condition, though cameo-designated pieces remain quite rare. Collectors should seek examples from fresh dies, as these will have the greatest amount of detail, particularly with respect to the shallower features of the design. Even then, proofs of 1936 and later years through 1968 will never have the detail of the 1909-16 issues, as the master hubs simply wore down from years of use.Read More
