1939-S cents enjoyed a large mintage for a San Francisco coins of the 1930s, and they are thus fairly common in worn condition. Mint State pieces are likewise plentiful, though the quality of pieces certified as fully red gems may be disappointing to a collector seeking technical quality, as well. The dies for this issue frequently reveal blurry details and erosion lines from overuse. The vast majority of 1939-S cents were coined during Fiscal Year 1940, which began July 1, 1939. The appropriation for the previous FY, which was based on the recession economy of 1937-38, was inadequate to meet the growing demand for cents, and the mint had to play catch up when new funding arrived July 1.Read More
