Introduction of Coins

The huge mintage of cents from the Denver Mint in 1942 was still not enough to meet the needs of commerce. It was largely suspected that millions of earlier cents were idled by unintentional hoarding, and this was especially severe during the holiday season: "Word comes from Washington that the Treasury is urging 30 million school children to enlist in a pre-Christmas drive to put these idle coins to work." Most 1942-D cents were reasonably well made, but the stepped up production did lead to some overuse of the dies. Thus, collectors will need to be picky in selecting sharply struck coins.Read More
