Introduction of Coins
Proof set sales nearly doubled from 1953 to 1954, and fully red gems of this date are plentiful. Most of these are coins that were removed from their original packaging early on and placed into better holders, as the Mint's plastic envelopes used in 1954 tended to tone coins more readily than those of other years. Cameo examples exist in sufficient numbers that advanced collectors should be able to locate a specimen. Ultra Cameo pieces are another matter, being seen only rarely.Read More
