Introduction of Coins
Quality control for this issue was poor, even by San Francisco Mint standards of the 1950s. Worn and overpolished dies left many of these coins quite blurry and their details incomplete. Only widespread roll hoarding of this date has provided enough gems to satisfy the demand from collectors. Numerous repunched mintmarks are known for 1954-S, most of them quite minor and of little interest. Small die breaks affecting the date and lettering are frequently seen, including the "San Jose" variety in which a J-shaped break on the right side of the mintmark makes it look like letters SJ. These minor breaks are of interest only to series specialists.Read More
