Modern Jefferson Nickel

First issued by the United States Mint in 1938, the Jefferson Nickel succeeded the Buffalo Nickel as the nation's five-cent piece. From its introduction until 2004, the coin's obverse consistently displayed a profile portrait of Founding Father Thomas Jefferson, designed by artist Felix Schlag. Struck in a copper-nickel alloy, this long-running series remains in production today with several design modifications over the decades.
