The run of low-mintage silver dollars that commenced in 1862 continued into this year. With the silver dollar worth nearly twice as much as the paper dollar in 1864, it's obvious that this was not a coin that circulated in its own time, at least not in most of the nation. The only place where this disparity of value didn't matter was in the western states and territories where paper currency was simply not accepted. Perhaps a quantity was shipped west for use there, which could account for the unusually high proportion of worn examples known today. Other dollars of the period are rarely found more than lightly worn. Mint State survivors are genuinely rare, though among these pieces are a number or choice and gem examples. While some of these coins have frosty luster, more often seen are dollars having semi-prooflike fields. Not surprisingly, just a single pair of dies was used for this modest mintage.
