The 1872-S silver dollar is one of just three issues for this type struck at the San Francisco Mint and the only one reasonably obtainable by collectors for the subtype with motto IN GOD WE TRUST. Its production of 9,000 pieces is small even for this generally low-mintage series. Just a single pair of dies was utilized, with the S mintmark being quite small, as seen on several other denominations for that year. Mint State examples are very rare, certainly fewer than two dozen being known. These may display either frosty or semi-prooflike fields, but no gems of this entry have been certified. Unlike most coins of this type, the 1872-S dollar has very broad distribution within the circulated grades, with many pieces being quite worn. The number of Details graded coins is a little more than half that recorded with Numeric grades. All 9,000 1872-S silver dollars were coined in September and then distributed in several batches, the last during January-February of 1873. This issue was intended primarily for domestic circulation, though at least one piece is known bearing Chinese chopmarks. It may have been among the 1,084 silver dollars paid to the Bank of California September 25, 1872 in exchange for a deposit of Mexican dollars (eight-reales pieces).阅读更多
