硬币介绍

For the proof coins of 1937 the Philadelphia Mint had perfected its process. The coins displayed a degree of brilliance lacking in the 1936 edition, yet very few proofs featured any cameo contrast between fields and devices. This was due to the fact that the dies were not sandblasted or chemically etched before polishing the fields, so the die cavities revealed only the natural texture of the steel. Repeated use of the dies caused the cavities to develop their own polish through friction, and true cameo proofs are exceedingly rare for any of the 1936-42 issues. In his book on the proof coins of this period, Roger Burdette estimated that some 7,390 proof 1937 quarters were coined to achieve a number of acceptable pieces for sale. As in 1936, the quarter dollar proved to be the least ordered denomination, and the net sales were 5,505 pieces of the 5,542 appearing in official mintage reports. A total of five obverse dies and six reverses were used, the reverse dies typically being replaced more often for this coin type. This issue is more available in higher grades than the previous year's proof quarter, though coins grading higher than PF 66 are still rare.阅读更多
