Proof sales rose by more than 50% over 1952, and a huge speculative market had developed in the proof sets issued since 1936. This boost in production seems to have prompted rushed and careless work, as many 1953 proof nickels are deficient in strike. Nevertheless, careful shopping will reward one with a gem.
