With all gold and silver coins at a premium to paper money, sales of proof coins fell into a predictable pattern for the war years 1862-65. The sales total for 1863 quarter dollars was 460 pieces. Examples in the lower grades are easily found, though gems can be quite elusive. Cameo proofs are available at a premium, but Ultra Cameo pieces are extremely rare.
