The mass redemption of the hated fractional currency notes really got underway in 1876, and Philadelphia recorded its highest mintage of the entire Seated Liberty Quarter Dollar series. This issue is common across all grades, including Mint State. Some truly outstanding gems have been certified, and these grace many an advanced typeset. With such a huge mintage (101 obverse dies and 108 reverses were prepared) the 1876(P) quarter has revealed several varieties.

Some were published in Briggs' superb encyclopedia on this series, while others were discovered subsequently and included within The Cherrypickers' Guide to Rare Die Varieties. Most 1876(P) quarters were coined with reverse dies of the Type 2 hub, and examples displaying the Type 1 reverse are very scarce.
